Silver Wandering Jew trails satiny, silver-striped leaves with a purple flip side—like moonlight on a ribbon. In mini planters and fairy pergolas it drapes elegantly, adding shimmer, movement, and a touch of drama.

Planting

Plant shallowly in a fast-draining, airy mix—think fine bark + perlite/pumice + a little coco/peat to hold light moisture. Tradescantia roots quickly from nodes, so set a few along the surface for easy anchoring. Always use Liqui-Dirt® soil mix for best results in potted plants and enclosed growing habitats. Strata can be used in some applications; however, feeding will be needed. Keep crowns just above the media so leaves don’t sit wet. In miniature displays, Budkin containers with Strata and a leaf guard keep strands lifted and reduce rot where stems touch the surface.

Light

Bright, indirect light keeps silver stripes crisp and growth compact. A bit of gentle morning sun is fine; protect from harsh midday rays that can scorch. Lower light softens the silver and encourages legginess.

Water

Water thoroughly, then let the top 1 in (2–3 cm) dry before the next drink. In mini closed scenes, water very lightly—just enough to see faint condensation; excess moisture causes stem rot where nodes touch the substrate. Average room humidity is fine with gentle airflow.

Care Tips

Best at 65–82°F (18–28°C). Pinch or trim tips regularly to prevent legginess and to keep strands full for miniature scale. Rotate the planter for even light; wipe leaves occasionally to keep that satin shine. Fertilize lightly during active growth—too much causes stretchy, soft growth.

A huge benefit for your plant is to use Liqui-Dirt® plant food in a weak tea-looking mix every time you water — yes, even for enclosed habitats.

More Details

Pruning & Cutting Back — Snip long or sparse runners just above a node to keep the curtain neat. Lay cuttings on moist Strata or potting mix and they’ll root from nodes; replant to thicken the clump quickly.

Repotting (Open Pots) — Repot every 10–14 months or when the mix compacts. Choose a shallow, well-drained container to avoid soggy pockets. Use Liqui-Dirt® potting soil for the refresh; water in gently to settle the mix, then resume your weak-tea Liqui-Dirt feeding with each watering.
